Collaboration with Mic.com

Mic.com

Mic.com approached us because they were building a website to raise awareness about the homicide epidemic in the transgender community. Along with a long form journalistic piece, Mic.com also created a database which would be a part of an ongoing project to document the lives and tragic deaths of the transgender homicide victims. Our challenge as designers and developers was to build a strong design system that could hold the seriousness of the topic without becoming heavy or intrusive.

We drew on our editorial experience from Condé Nast to design a layout that is highly readable, clean, and always in support of the subject. We utilized subtle animations to display the charts and statistics. For the database, our design allows the victim’s stories to be at the forefront while giving the editors an easy experience to make updates and changes as needed. We built the platform using React, a flexible JavaScript library for large applications where the data will update over time.

We were honored to work with Mic.com on this important and urgent issue. See the website here.
